Q. What Benefit is there in SEO?

A. This is something I get asked nearly every day, "what are the benefits of a highly optimized web site?"

So what really is SEO all about?

First of all ask yourself (or your client this) "Why do you want to get more visitors?" Answer: "More visitors = more customers, more customers = more sales!" Or... "Increased product awareness, marketing or even customer services". The truth is there's a million and one reasons why everyone needs a well optimized site, and if you find a reason 'not' to, then perhaps the real question should be "Why have you got a web site - at all?"

   Did you know, that according to recent statistics, 812 million people used the Internet in 2004 (Source:Nielsen/NetRatings) and that web users spend twice as much time online as they do watching TV! (Source: Stanford Institute for the Quantitative Study of Society).

   Did you know, that consumers spent US$199 billion online in 2004 (Source: ComScore), and that a survey conducted by market research firm TNS revealed that 75% of all online shoppers said that "company size was not a factor in having their online shopping needs satisfied". in fact, only 15% said they preferred to shop with large retailers (Source: TNS).That blows the "I'm only a small shop, business operator" argument out of the water!

   Did you know, that more than 80% of all Internet users find new web sites through search engines (Source: Georgia Tech/GVU Users Survey). That means that about 650 million people use search engines to find web sites! Or, in simple terms, that's a possible 650 millions sales so one is missing out on!

   Did you know, search engine users are some of the most qualified and motivated visitors to your web site you will ever have. After all, they have taken the initiative to hunt for online resources on a certain topic. And then they clicked your link to learn more..... Think of it like a virtual shop, would you or your client(s) spend money opening a new premises, staffing it, stocking it and then never telling anyone about it? A web site is no different, it's an investment in a new property, all be it a 'virtual one'.

What SEO does, is tell people "Hey look over here!", and brings them to your shop window (in this case your home page for example). Once they arrive, they begin window shopping, if you have what they like they'll come in and browse around...... getting the picture?
